Final

I don't have much to report this time as there really wasn't much involved in the process. I started with the Mudbox bust and just built detail into it from there. Normally, I'd add a ton of detail, hate it, smooth most of it out and repeat until I got something I could be satisfied with.

I did notice that sculpting with a tablet was definitely far superior to the mouse. The pressure sensitivity really did another dimension of control.

I was planning on doing more expressions with this character's face but I really ran out of time. I tried to paint it but I've never really had to paint stuff that looked semi-realistic before so it was hard for me. If it had been a bit more cartoony I think I could have managed to create something that I'd have been satisfied with but it just wasn't going to happen.

So instead of painting it, I just added more detail to it. I'm not completely unpleased with the way it came out. Although I think it came out looking a lot more Roman Emperor-looking than I originally intended but.. I think it works.

More Old Man Head

I took my previous old man head and worked some more detail into it. I gave him some wrinkles, added eyelids and reworked some of the construction of his face. I also attempted to model ears that actually looked like ears. I wouldn't say that I succeeded but I don't think I failed either.

Skeleton Drawing

I had access to one of those small wooden mannequin things so I figured it'd be fun to pose it and draw it.

I took a photo of a man in his underwear with some kind of machine gun and attempted to draw it. The proportions are definitely wacky. I think things seem especially off in his legs. There was some foreshortening there that I just failed to recreate.

Working with traditional pencil and paper is kind of a pain. I really don't draw much and when I do draw it's always on the computer. I've really gotten very reliant on the computer's ability to cut, resize, and rotate. Sometimes I found myself thinking I could fix this in no time at all if I could just transform it.

Exercise #2

Rather than making a pepper, I went out on a leaf and made a pumpkin.

Exercise #1

For the first exercise, I took the bust model in Mudbox and tried to model it into the form of an old man.

I also messed around with moving different parts of the face with the grab tool in order to change his expression. I still think it's amazing how much emotion you get from changing the brow.
